Totally agree about cities having an underlying message, that permeates their fabric and influences you.
There are definitely places that are in-between Montreal and Ottawa, places that are slightly less Montreal-ish, but not quite as dead as Ottawa. (also there are cities that are just as alive as Montreal but in a different way. If Montreal has great night life, Vancouver has great day-life. You don't maximize your nights in Vancouver like you do in Montreal, but you do maximize the quality of your day hours in Vancouver in a way that you never could in Montreal)
There is a real opportunity in recognizing in yourself these changing phases, and being in a position to change where you are to optimize your city for the phase you find yourself in. (Programmers can live in just about any city in the world they want to be, which is a rare gift)

For all the talk about loving Montreal, few people are touching on the fact that there is value in being away from friends and family, and the city. First of all, you give your friends a chance to travel on a budget (I am just sort of joking about this one), but also you get to compare and contrast and get a point of view I feel is lost on people who never leave Montreal.

In anycase, if you want to try your hand at living somewhere else (that could possible give Montreal a run for it's money) if only for a short period, I would seriously consider applying to YC.
